About Defence Jobs

The Indian Defence Industry is a very important sector in India. With a strength of 1.44 million active personnel, it is the world’s second-largest military force. India has the world’s largest volunteer military of over 5.1 million personnel.

The Indian Armed Forces are the military forces of the Republic of India. It consists of three professional uniformed services:

  • Indian Army
  • Indian Navy
  • Indian Air Force

Additionally, the Indian Armed Forces are supported by the Indian Coast Guard and paramilitary organisations (Assam Rifles, and Special Frontier Force) and various inter-service commands and institutions such as the Strategic Forces Command, the Andaman and Nicobar Command and the Integrated Defence Staff.
The Indian Armed Forces are under the management of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of the Government of India. 

The Department of Defence Production of the Ministry of Defence is responsible for the indigenous production of equipment used by the Indian Armed Forces. It comprises the 41 Indian Ordnance Factories under the control of the Ordnance Factories Board.

What are the career options in Indian Armed Forces ?

For pursuing a career in Defence Jobs in India, the UPSC - Union Public Service Commission recruits the Commissioned Officers in the Armed Forces by conducting the following exams :

  • Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS Exam)
  • National Defence Academy Examination (NDA)
  • Naval Academy Examination

The Combined Defence Services Examination (CDS Exam) is conducted twice a year by UPSC for the recruitment of candidates into the Indian Military Academy, Air Force Academy, Naval Academy for Permanent Commission and Officers Training Academy (OTA) for Short Service Commission.

UPSC holds the entrance examination twice a year for entry into the NDA and Naval Academy.

Apart from recruitment through UPSC, the commissioned officers are also recruited in the Army through the Non-UPSC entries.
The Indian Army offers Permanent commission as well as short service commissions. Permanent Commission is granted through Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun and Short Service Commission (SSC) is granted through Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai.

Indian Navy

  • Executive Branch - Includes specialization in Gunnery & Missiles, Navigation & Direction, Communications, Anti Submarine Warfare, Pilot, Observer, Diving, Hydrography, Air Traffic Control, Naval Armament Inspection, IT & Logistics.
  • Engineering Branch - Join as Naval Architecture, General Service Engineer.
  • Electrical Branch - Responsible for the ship to fight effectively and to keep all the equipments at peak efficiency.
  • Educational Branch - Responsible for scientific and methodical instructions, including theoretical aspects of technical subjects of all branches of the navy and also for general education.

Indian Coast Guard

One can join the Indian Coast Guard as :

  • Officer Entry - General Duty, General Duty Women, Pilot Navigator, Commercial Pilot Entry, Technical Entry, Law Entry.
  • Sailor Entry - Yantriks, Navik (GD), Navik (DB).
